Yesterday we woke up to an awful sound. We have been replacing our fence and had the ducks penned up but the neighbor dog got loose and killed our Pekin drake and our swedish hen is now alone. We went to get her a friend today with a reputable poultry breeder. she sent us home with a chinese emden cross gosling. Now that I'm reading more about it, im thinking we made a big mistake....
Should I take the gosling back and find her a drake, hen duck?? any advice is appreciated. We really just want 2 birds.

We have 1/2 acre in the burbs fully fenced (missing gates until monday). With tons of grass a small pond that is 2 feet deep.

We loved our Pekin drake he was such a character!!

Hi Ednas Keeper,

Depending on the age of the gosling, if it's really young then it will still need heat and if your hen doesn't take to it, it may get to cold at night on it's own. Do you have a shelter for them? Your hen may very well take to the little gosling and care for and raise it like it's her baby. My ducklings hang out with the goslings and the older geese. The geese will at times chase off the ducklings, even now that the ducks are older, but it's only temporary, and soon they are all back together again. You may want to take back the gosling and pick up another duck friend for your hen, but that would just be a personal preference. The goose will be much larger than the duck. Birds of a Feather do Flock together, but I am sure if you kept the gosling they would hang out and get along, since it's just the two of them.

Sorry about your loss.
