Switch from heat plate to heat lamp

I had to switch from 2 heat plates to heat lamps because I had 2-4 baby chicks dead every morning. I finally realized they were getting stepped on by others under the heat plates. I had 2 heat plates and they would all get under 1 and get on top of others.
I had no idea baby chicks sleep flat on the ground. They even burry their beaks into the ground.
