Hi...my small flock has reached 5 months old, and I understand it's time to switch them to layer food. I have a few questions! Pardon my ignorance!

First, is the laying food OK for my two roo's to eat?

What do I need to supplement their diet with? Besides grit, oyster shell.

Last, I know with dogs you have to slowly change their food. Is this necessary with chickens too?

Thanks so much!!!

Your roos can eat the layer feed too. Supplement with grit and oyster shell.
Check out Buff Hooligan's treat chart at the very top of this category for ideas on what kitchen scraps/treats you can offer.
It's a good idea to make the feed change gradually, mixing the old feed in with the layer feed, if possible.

Yes, I recommend changing feed slowly. We did 25-75, then 50-50, and so on. FWIW we did not change to layer feed until the first egg was laid. We had 1 Roo who ate the layer feed with no problems.

My humble 2 cents.

Ma
