my chickens are about 15 weeks old, except for my olive eggers which are 17-18 weeks old.

we just switched them off of grower food at the recommendation of the feed store employee. she gave us Kalmbach layer pellets

is this stuff any good? what do you all recommend? should i start oyster shells right away? or wait to see what the shells look like when i start getting eggs?

I keep mine on flock raiser (OS on the side). I have heard good things about Kalmbach. The OS should be fine now, though I would wait for laying before going to layer feed. But you're probably close enough.

they still probably had another week or two worth of grower feed in their feeder, which i just mixed in with the layer pellets so im assuming they’re getting a good mix of both now

I have been convinced by the experienced people here that for a backyard flock it's best to use an 18-20% all-flock feed with oystershell on the side instead of layer pellets.

The final straw that convinced me was that I was paying the price of feed for the weight of the oystershell in the 50# bag -- not to mention mixed ages and having males.

thanks for the info. once they run low of this food in about two weeks i’ll switch them to a higher protein all flock feed.

@3KillerBs do you have a specific feed you recommend?
