my 15 week old Pekin duck has swollen cheeks. they aren't around her eyes, but it's really strange because she's never had this. and my other duck doesn't
400
have it.

I suspect either a sting, a bite, or an infection.

A good duck vet is best…..

Meanwhile, look under the bill, try to get a good look inside the bill (I have read opening the bill at the base is the way to go). Are the nares plugged up? It could be an infection moving from the nares to the sinuses to the rest of the head, perhaps.

Any signs of puncture would indicate a bite - are there venomous animals in your area? I would really seek a vet's help with something like that.

If it is an infection, then antibiotics are needed. Putting some apple cider vinegar in the water can help a little but is no substitute for antibiotics. A vet who does test cultures to determine the best antibiotic to use is practicing good medicine.

For a sting, I don't know how you would put a little antihistamine on a sting there - perhaps work a little bit in at the base of the bill?

Daisy is doing a lot better! Her cheeks have gone down, and she seems fine. She wouldn't let me open her bill- she can be very ignorant. But I decided to just see what happened after a couple days and if she wasn't better after 3, I would have to find a vet. But this morning her cheeks seem to be almost normal, it might of been a "head cold", because it has been raining here for about a week!

I'm glad she is doing better. We've had the rain here too.

Can a duck have a reaction to fire ants? I think my duck, Chester, got bitten. He has tiny bloody chewed looking spots on his wings and under his neck to the right of his chest he has fluid and is swollen. Help! Can he have liquid Benadryl? does anyone know?

I am not a vet, and one must be very careful dosing benedryl. I have used benedryl ointment for a bee sting on a duck's foot, checked with a vet before doing so. If you fear for his life, you may want to consider giving it to him. If you decide to, The Ultimate Pet Duck Guidebook suggests one dose of Children's Benedryl Allergy oral suspension, 2.2 ml per kg of body weight. For healthy adult duck, if no vet available. A vet is needed, but I know not always possible.
