Swollen eyelid-now weak. Not getting better Help!

I have a 2 year old hen that had a swelling below eye (not sure what happened).

We have been flushing and applying antibiotic ointment for a few days. She is now acting weak and has trouble getting her legs under her. Her comb is also pale. She has no respiratory symptoms (no sneeze, cough or drainage). Any ideas? What do we try next?

Can you look inside her beak for lesions or canker?

Has she been able to see to get to food - have you actually seen her eating/drinking?

Crop emptying?



I would say that the scab/crust needs to come off the swelling and the pus removed in order for the eye to heal. If you have vet care, that would be best.

No lesions that I saw (Also no smell). I have seen her drink and eat some scratch and apple bits but I am planning to make an egg and sit with her to make sure she eats it. Maybe she isn't eating her normal feed?

I will see if I can rub the scab off. How do I get the puss out?

Can't get her to the vet until later this week.

Can you get a warm wet wash cloth and hold it on the eye for about 10-15 minutes to soften the scab? Is the scab on her lower eyelid? Is her eyeball intact?

Will definitely try the washcloth. It seems to be on her lower eyelid but her behind it seems completely fine.

This is my first time through this. Could this all just be from an eye injury or does it sound like something else and the eye is a symptom?

Google isn't much help as she doesn't seem to have anything aside from the weakness.

Could be from an injury that got infected.
