My pregnant Mini Alpine (Due Late May) has a swollen vulva today. No discharge. Her vulva is of normal color too, dark like the rest of her skin. Either side of the opening is slightly raised. Is this normal? Also, I am wondering if anyone has ways to tell if she's pregnant. She had an ultrasound at her past owners place, but after relocating her I am wondering if she aborted/absorbed her kid(s). I have checked the ground and her back-end for blood daily and haven't noticed any. Thanks

As the pregnancy progresses the vulva often appears soft and puffy. Look at the goat from the rear at the area where the udder joins the body. Changes in the udder due to pregnancy first show up here.

I have a doe that I put in with the buck the last weekend of Nov 2024 She still has about 1 1/2 more month + to go as I don't know the exact day of breeding. She's a first time 2 year old. She is definitely bred and her nipples have increased drastically in size the past few days. I noticed her vulva is starting to swell. I'm hoping this is normal for her. I'm worried she may be miscarrying. There was a time when the buck escaped about a month before. He had been out with the girls the whole day. Most of them were beating him up. She was all happy to see him. So there's a possibility she's delivering a month before the rest of them. I can't find any information except on one website that says some swell up during pregnancy. But everyone else says only just before delivery.

Did your doe deliver a kid?

Some swell. Some don't. This is not something I ever paid much attention to. Shortly before a doe delivers the tail bone often gets very loose. As in able to get your fingers under it loose. Also look for a stringy discharge.

Thanks. I used to have goats years ago but never bred any of them. They were mostly show wethers. And help my neighbors feed theirs when they go on vacation once a year. The older doe I have is the mother to the one in question and she never swelled like that. I was worried something was possibly wrong and she might be miscarrying. She's eating fine and being her normal "verbal" self. No discharge or blood. And nothing on the internet talks about does swelling up for any other reason but getting ready to deliver. And nothing in my old goat books.
