Hi there. Hope someone can help me. This is Snowy, she is about 7 months old. For the last week I’ve been struggling to get het better. Her earlobes are swollen like 2 little balls (on the photo it was before I got antibiotics, it looks worse now), her wattle and her neck is swollen (skin at the back of neck is stiff/swollen if you touch it). It seems her glands under her head, at the sides of the face, is also swollen. I’ve taken her to the Vet and she got antibiotics and pain medication. She is still not better, I think she may be getting worse. She’s been sleeping a lot the last 3 days. Every time I give her some food or water, she eats and drinks, but she doesn’t want to walk to the food and she does not want to go outside. She stands fine and walk slowly, she just sleeps a lot and is not social. At first, I thought my Silkie rooster bit her on her neck, because I saw him bite her and she would not allow it and she would pull away. He bit her on the back of her neck. I thought the swelling of the neck could be because of that but the swelling is not going down and I’ve been isolating her. Taking her back to the vet is not an option as the vet does not really treat any other animals than dogs and cats so I don’t have anyone else to ask in town.

What antibiotics did the vet give?
How often are you giving it to her?

I will quickly go and check at home but I know the vet gave her dog antibiotics and pain medication, as they don't normally treat chickens. She did say it will be fine for Snowy, I could not refuse because I thought it will actually work. I will go have a look and reply as soon as possible. It was one tablet once a day. That I can say to you.

The vet gave inflacam for pain and Baytril 15mg once a day for 5 days

You may want to clean out any gunk in her ears. An ear infection can be due to mites, bacteria or virus. You may use QTips, a few drops of hydrogen peroxide to clean out the ears, and apply plain Neosporin triple antibiotic ointment into the ear for treatment. Hard to know if the neck swelling is due to the rooster mating or something else.

Is Neosporin an over the counter ointment? And I did check the ears, they looked clean to me, but they are so small, I will have to check again. Is there anything else I can give her. I have doxycyline 7.5mg at home, will that help for anything? Sorry I just want to make sure I do everything I can. Snowy is one of our house pets, me and the kids love her.

@Kiki
I am so sorry, I don't know what the time difference is, as I only saw now you are from Houston, TX.

You will see I did reply on your message but like I said, the Baytril 15mg once a day did not help. She looks worse now with the swelling of the earlobes. I did check her ears, there is no discharge, it is clean and seems healthy. She still eats and drink water but she is getting really thin, that worries me.

I do have Doxycycline 7.5mg at home, won't that maybe help. Last night when I got home, I saw her breathing with a slightly open mouth and it made a funny noise, only when I hold her. As soon as I put her down, the breathing was more normal. May respiratory infection?

There is no discharge anywhere, not the mouth, not the nose and eyes are clear. Just the skin above eyes is swollen, het wattle, her earlobes and glands under 'cheeks' if I can call it that.

We contacted a Vet in a bigger City yesterday, they treat more variety of animals, but even they could not assist me with Snowy. They find it strange that I want to take my chicken to the vet.

THis page is really the only help I've gotten, so thank you so much.

Could this be an insect sting?
You can try Benadryl and see if the swelling goes down.
If she is a bantam, give half a tablet
