My Rhode Island Red is showing symptoms of egg binding but in checking her vent there is no egg. She walks like a penguin, sits a lot. When I checked her vent I did see signs of poop, but I didn't feel an egg at all. What else could it be?

Two of my hens have showed signs of this and then passed away.... honestly I have no idea what it is! It could've been a softshell egg that broke inside of her and has caused infection. Or it could be reproductive cancer..... hopefully you will find some good info/treatment on this. hope she gets better!

edit// actually, one of the hens that showed exactly this was a RIR... maybe it's a genetic thing.

Sorry about your girls, bantamluv I hope I find a way to 'fix her up'. Thanks for your input

What you can do is lubricate a gloved finger And stick it into her vent about an inch straight in. If you don't feel an egg there isn't one. If you do feel an egg I can help you from there. I just did this on one of my hens last night. No egg, thank goodness!

This is not a symptom of egg binding, it is a symptom of egg yolk peritonitis. They often get confused, but egg binding is very uncommon. If her abdomen feels bloated then egg yolk peritonitis seems likely - I would take her to a vet if you have one nearby.

If you want an actual cure for it see if you can get her a suprelorin implant, however I am not sure if they are available yet outside the UK.

When I had the Buff Orpington with cancer, the bloating wasn't as noticeable in the beginning. I felt no egg. She did eventually lay an egg without a shell, but it looked cancerous. Some breeds are more prone to cancer.
