I brought a fecal sample into the vet and our chickens have hymenlopis tapeworm. Our vet said she is having a hard time figuring out which dewormer will work on this particular type of tapeworm. Any know for certainty which one will kill the worms? Thanks!

Hymenlopis tapeworm is a dwarf tapeworm that infects chickens, as well as humans and other animals. Praziquantel is the recommended treatment. Tapeworms are spread by eating snails, insects, and rat droppings, especially in damp areas. Keeping chicken droppings and intermediate hosts cleaned up may help to control infections.

Thank you eggcessive and coach723 so much for the help! Much appreciated!! I am admittedly a little grossed out as well. I'm going to need to figure out how to clean and make sure we get rid of all of the eggs. For the most part, I feel like our coop is pretty clean - I try to clean the bird poo out of the coop daily - sometimes every other day. Off to tractor supply. TY

Try deterring insects that are hosts for tapeworms.

Hi all. Talked to our vet. We're going with Equimax. She said do not eat the eggs for 8 weeks - no problemo. (She said this is a specific recommendation based on our flock, whatever that means.) I can only find the paste for about $10 and the liquid for horses for like $250. I would like to use the liquid - and we only have 12 chickens - don't need enough for lots of horses. Any recommendations for where to purchase?

In most tapeworm infestation in chickens, people use praziquantel which you can find in horse wormers. Equimax is found at most feed stores, and the dosage is 0.16 ml for a 5 pound chicken. Zimectrin gold is more expensive, and dosage is different. Both of those contain praziquantel.
What method is best to administer to the chickens?
