i have a 5-1/2yr old White Shepherd. Very high prey drive. I've taken her sheep herding and the trainer said she's got a lot of natural instinct and very mouthy (shepherds tend to be mouthy). She's always been infatuated with the chicks but I've never let her loose with them.
Last night I let the 6 chicks out (13weeks old) while I cleaned the run and did chores. The coop is attached to my barn inside the horse corral. One chick decided she wanted to sit on the gate above the wire mesh, leaving no protection from jaws on the other side of the gate.
I turn around and see my dog grabbing the chicks tail feathers ever so gently, I yell out, the chick just moves a little and my dog goes for a second taste. This time the chick jumps off the fence.
I guess I'll see if the chicks go back on the gate or if it was a lesson learned.
Believe me I take no chances with my dogs, if she wanted to eat the chick she could have.
