I had planned on starting this thread the same day we closed on our new house, but fate intervened and Verizon had trouble hookig us up to phone and internet service.

We went straight to the new house on Monday the 11th as the seller had said she would leave some of her chickens to be a starter flock for me. She had left me 14, but 1 was dead which left 1 rooster and 12 hens. One of the hens was broody and sitting on 8 eggs due to hatch anytime. It was getting late so decided pictures could wait till the next day and we went back to the apartment we were renting till the end of the month.

Tuesday I went back to the house and set up a nipple waterer for the chickens and let them out to freerange. They had a blast as the srea they were in has no vegetation at all. I only had them out for a couple of hours and then put them back.
Also an open front coop and a 4 foot fence, so not the best or safest environment. Not a problem, as I would gradually take care of that, right?

Wrong! I was on the second step of a stepladder taking down wallpaper and slipped and hit the ground somewhat less than gracefully. I could tell something was very wrong with my right ankle and knee. I did have my cell phone on me, so used it to call 911. I remembered to use that infamous line, "I've fallen and I can't get up!"

911 sent 2 ambulance crews and I was picked up off the floor and placed on a stretcher and taken to the ER. X-rays were taken and my ankle was broken. They called in an orthopedic surgeon who said that with most breaks, they would wait a day or so for swelling to go down before setting it, but my breaks were special and needed fixed immediately. He had the ER put a cast on my ankle for transport to the delivery room because it was so fragile he was afraind more damage would be done on the way up.

I was in surgery for several hours and now have plates and screws. I then moved to recovery and then my room. I was in the hospital till Thursday afternoon and then went home to the new house in a wheelchair instead of the apartment as the house has 2 steps to get inside and the apartment had 26.

I cannot put any weight on the foot untill after I see the Dr. on Monday. It will depend on how it is doing then.

I have a walker to move short distances inside the house, but cannot go too far with it because I am recovering from Frozen Shoulder Syndrome and still have pain and weakness on that side.

My husband, who only agreed to chickens if he did not have to do anything for them, is taking care of the chickens.

My broody hatched her chicks but apparently all were taken by a predator. I think it was crows, as there were a LOT of them that day and normally I only hear a few, so I am still at 13 chickens.

i can hardly wait to go out and see them again. I absolutely LOVE chickens and the ones I got are terrific! I can hear the rooster crow sometimes, but cannot see them from the room I am in.

I know this was really long, I just couln't keep it all in any longer. I will keep this thread going as my own chicken saga.

And I STILL don't have any pictures of my chickens!

wow, you've certainly been through a lot!!! Hopefully, when you heal up, you can start enjoying your wonderful birds. I'm sure you'll just love them too. Please be careful now!!

Well, hmph!

I had a good chicken day today and a great visit from my son, but I also had a doctor's appointment and have to keep the weight off my foot for another 3 weeks!

The chickens did something that they have not done before. Their fence is only 4 feet high and not predator proofed, so easy to jump up and out of. They heard my voice and all came jumping over to the fence and over to my wheelchair. They were so sweet! I even petted a few of them. There are 2 that do this every day, but always the same 2. When we got home from the doctor's office, they were all back in their fence. I LOVE chickens!

The doctor did explain more in detail about my injury and his repair to it. I broke a small ankle bone that he said was inconsequential. The big problem was that I broke my tibia down at the bottom where it supports the ankle and keeps it in place. He fixed it with a 3 inch long metal plate and several screws. The 11 staples were taken out and I have a new cast. The new cast fits better than the old one, as the old one was put on before the swelling went down. The bone needs to heal well before putting weight on it as it has pressure on it both up and down and from the side.

I am going to have lived in this house for over a month and not know where anything is because my DH is doing all the unpacking and putting away. He is a keeper for sure!

Eventually I will have pictures of actual chickens on this thread, promise!

I feel terrible for my chickens. They are not living the life I envisioned for them.

I can't do anything about it till this leg gets healsed enough to walk on again. 2 1/2 more weeks till I might get a boot.

It is 102F here this afternoon. The heat index is 130! Hubby has been checking morning and evening that they have water. Stay cool, chickens!

I am still housebound, but DH got a picture of my chickens for me. 12 hens and a roo. The only named one is Nosey Rosie, named by my mother-in-law. Rosie hops the fence to free range every day. No, my coop and run are not secure. Can't fix it till I am mobile. Just excited to have a picture of them

Had a chicken scare this evening. Hubby went out to feed the chickens and came back with the report that one was injured and could not get up. I asked him to pick her up and check for injuries and nope, uh uh, not touching a chicken!

So I asked him if he would push me in my wheelchair over to the run so I could check her out. Yep, no problem.

Chicken stayed on the ground as he pushed me to the run, opened the gate, and wheeled me over to her. I leaned over and picked her up. Looked her over carefully. No blood. No broken bones. Nothing feels out of place. Crop is fine. Don't see any mites.

Put her on the ground and she strolled casually away, dunno. . .

Just glad she is okay.

Today there was a dead chicken. Unsure if it was the same one that was acting funny yesterday. Did not process.
