I want to hear about your chickens that have crazy stories. Maybe they lay more eggs than they are “supposed” to, survived a crazy incident, or are just funny gals (or guys).

We have a silkie named Rosa. She is a favorite of my husband (who did not want chickens) but picked her out as a singleton from a farm store to join some chicks that my baby sister (6) had hatched in an incubator. We stopped “just to look” and added the cutest little fluff to our cheeping box. When we got home and my husband started googling silkies he was disgusted that he had brought one home. Didn’t want chickens, much less a chicken with mediocre egg laying, small eggs, poor free range ability, bottom of the totem pole, etc. She ended up being the only girl in that bunch of 6, is tough and mean as sin, free ranges like a lunatic, AND is our most consistent layer. If it’s a blizzard she’s outside, downpour she’s outside. She is the boss, the sneakiest and quickest little treat gobbler, and we love her dearly. Shes going on four and is the only hen currently laying alongside the pullets. When she gets excited her head twitches, sometimes dragging her body in an opposite direction that she’s trying to go. We can’t get enough of Rosa and wish we had 10 more just like her!

Is she just so tough that she can go stand on a roll of barbed wire?

I would have to pick Merida, my Speckled Sussex. She's always very curious about what I'm doing. She'll run up the back steps to check on me or greet me, I'm not sure which, or maybe she's just hoping it's treat time. She just got a wing trimmed tonight because she always hops the fence and gets out of the run early in the morning before I'm ready to let them out, and has taught two or three of the BA pullets to do the same. She's about 3 years old, maybe 4 and I'm not sure if she's still laying, but she's been squatting for me lately, big time. I would say she's top hen in terms of the fact that all the others follow her lead, but she's not an enforcer. She just does what she does and all the others follow. She's the matriarch.

rosa looks adorable! i’ve always wanted to have some silkies of my own, they have such big personalities and are so fun to be around. my lavender orpington, kumo, loves to go on walks! we went on walks around our neighborhood all the time. sometimes, we’d even go to the park and she’d love to dig in the leaves. she will follow me basically everywhere, and loves being held and cuddled. i wish people knew how fun it is to have chickens, they’re such fun and gentle creatures!

walking your chicken is hilarious, I’m sure that is so cute to see! An Orpington is definitely on my list of chickens to add:) I had no idea how unique chicken personalities could be. We love to just sit outside and watch the chickens!

I don't currently have any who's particularly different, but I have some who're very friendly and funny.

When they were babies I named one of them Dora, as in Dora the explorer, because she was always the first to run to me, and first to go new places. When they got older, two more got just as tame and curious, so I guess I have three Dora's now

One of the first chickens I had as a teen would go on bike-rides with me. I'd pop her onto the steering wheel and off we went (around the farm, not on the road). In hindsight, I don't know if she actually enjoyed it, but she at least tolerated it...
