Hello everyone! This is my first post on this website! I will be purchasing a coop on Sunday (if I can find a truck to rent) to pick up a chicken coop that was created out of wooden pallets. Seller is asking for $40. It will need a new roof as well as something to lock the door at night so raccoons and other critters can’t get in. Any suggestions on how to redo a roof or any locking mechanisms you suggest for a wire door? Pics to come on Sunday once I bring the coop home. Please bear in mind, I’m a total chicken owning noob and I apologize if I’m asking dumb questions. 😅

This coop will be used to house my 2 Silkie 16wk pullets in them as well as my other day old chicks until the 8ct lean-to (off my backyard shed) chicken pen is finished. After the minor repairs are done, any suggestions on what I can do with the extra coop? Thanks in advance!

Here is the picture of the used coop I bought. I’ve started some of the Reno on Sunday and it was fun and challenging that day. Looking forward to the overall finishing product.

Cover all around the coop with 1/2" hardware cloth.
Attach a 2' apron of HC around the entire perimeter and pin down the outer edges with landscape pins.
For the roof put on a new sheet of PLYWOOD (not OSB) and cover it in two layers of roofing felt wrapping around the edges and underneath the overhang. You will want to use plastic washers with short nail to secure the felt as it will tear off in a good wind.
All this is temporary as you are building a proper coop.
I can't see the doors so hard to comment on how to secure them.

How many birds will you keep in there?

Oh, and... Welcome to BYC! @khudsontn
I assume Tennessee, but....
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!
