My Marans chicks are in the house in a brooder and are driving me nuts, they need to be moved outside. They're both fully feathered but not yet 3/4 the size of the adult hens, which is when I was told it is safe to start keeping them together 24/7. They all get along with the adults right now, and the adults have mostly stopped picking on them...but if it's only safe to have them living with the adults 24/7 once they're 3/4 the size of the adults, then so be it. But, they need to be moved outside before then. I'm looking for some ideas for a makeshift coop, something that can just be used temporarily to keep them outside until they're big enough to be with the adult girls all the time, unsupervised. I was thinking of using a large covered dog crate, but those are so expensive! Does anyone have any ideas? Help would be greatly appreciated.

Is your coop capable of sectioning off a spot? i don't mix my chickens but for my ducks i have stalls that i can close down to put young birds into.

Biggest issue is overnight as you know preds thing babies are a drive through so safety is of utmost importance so crates and so forth outside would not be.

I think a crate would be perfectly safe if I could get my hands on one - if a 60lb dog can't escape a zip-tied crate, I don't think anything is getting into one. :) Problem is I don't have a spare one so it won't work anyways.
I could possibly divide my coop in two, that's an idea. Just plain old chicken wire would do, right?
