Hi all,

My quail are a week old today. I have the brooder in my office and I work at home. Honestly though, they STINK!

I can set up a temporary brooder outside with the heat plate for over night. They would have 80% shade 24/7 and I can provide deep shade as well. Temps will be in the high 90s. Too hot?

I personally would give them about 1/2 week more or have a small battery-powered fan in there if you do. but I'm pretty sure you can just buy a small fan from the Dollar Tree and that should keep them cool. just make sure that they have plenty of cold water and if you do realize that they start panting and that means they need to go back inside until the weather can kind of cool and they get older.

I do not recommend putting 1 week old quail outside.

2-3 week old quail would do a lot better outside than 1 week old. If the temperature stays about 90-95F then yes they could be fine outside. (Still do not recommend it)

Usually when the quail is fully feathered you could put them outside. (5-6 weeks)

If the smell is just too awful to handle, I recommend putting them in a room with some open windows, or putting them in the garage.
I usually put my tiny critters in a spare room with a window open. I also have a DoTerra water humidifier that has a lemon fragrance if the smell is super horrid.

Hope this helped a little

Thank you QNF. Unfortunately, I live in Phoenix so no open windows here right now.

I'm curious as to why you suggest against it? Temps won't be too hot or cold and they'll be in an enclosed garden.

This is a case of you won't know until you try it....wild quail are out in the weather but the chicks can get under the hen if they get chilled....I'd be more concerned about them running out of water in an outside brooder.
Try it and check on them often, ambient temps are almost the right temp but the heat pad will still need to be working just in case they get chilled, and you don't want drafts getting to them, either.
Another point is if their outside and escape the brooder, you'll most likely never find them again.
I've never put any week olds in an outside brooder. The temps here are not that hot at the time my quail are hatching. I wait until they are fully feathered out before I move mine to an outside broader. So no 1st hand experience here...you can try it, if it doesn't work, you can bring them back inside.

Thanks Sean. I'm going to move the chicks over the weekend so they'll almost be 2 weeks old. I'll be wrapping the bottom of the garden with 1/4" hwc first so there won't be any escapees.
