My Grandson is 13 and has been keeping chickens with his Dad for about 4 years and as I found out he taught me everything I know today about raising chickens. Last year my Grandsons Dad had to be away from home for work for extended periods of time, so I got the opportunity to help my Grandson with the 60 some chickens his Dad and him were tending too. I soon found out that real fast that my Grandson was very knowledgeable about the whole process and had all kinds of ideas to improve how we keep our Klan of chickens. We were selling eggs to local friends and I have been selling eggs at work for a couple of years, we have a steady customer base. Last fall my grandson told me that he had a idea to sell fertile eggs he said Grandpa you can sell fertile eggs for a lot more then eggs for eating. I of course agreed to help him look into his idea and sure enough he was correct so I told him that we would wait till spring to get some chicks. We started our research on line with three main items that we wanted our chicks to have they were a hearty egg layer in cold weather, a good meat bird, and mild tempered birds (especially the Rooster). After spending hours looking at all different breads we decided on the Australian Australorp bread and have not been disappointed. We got our day old Chicks last April, 1 Rooster and 16 hens which started laying eggs in the fall and have amazed us with how many eggs we get even when its below zero out. We now are getting fertile eggs but needed to see how well our Rooster was doing so we started collecting eggs to hatch the day after Christmas collecting 30 eggs and starting the process. A week and a half in the incubator we candled the eggs and found that we had 22 eggs out of the 30 that had chicks in them. 21 days into the process they started to hatch and we got 15 out of the 22 that hatched. We now have the record of this event so were ready to sell fertile. Last week we sold our first 3 doz fertile eggs and they are in the incubator and hopefully have good results.
All and all I have and continue to have a great time with my grandson and learning daily.
