Hi All.
I recently joined the BYC group and decided to check out the "Where Am I? Where Are You?" forum, but haven't seen a lot of new posts made under 'Texas'. I'm sure the Lonestar State has a lion's share of chicken folk, so I'm just sending out a holla to y'all.
I'm not a native Texan, but am a relatively recent (Dec. '08) transplant from Oregon. After being "chickenless" for about 10 years, I started up again with a small mixed laying flock in 2011 and received a second shipment of 18 pullet chicks (mixed bag of breeds) about 2 weeks ago. I ultimately am hoping to add Marans (BC) to my flock and while the goal is not to show (though I used to show in the past), I am interested in breeding Marans according to the standard. (And who knows...maybe I'll get bit by the "show bug" again.)
Also, a long time 4-H volunteer and past extension employee in the states of CA, AZ, UT, and OR, I'm interested in youth oriented events in the North Texas area (I reside in Iowa Park). My 9 year-old granddaughter has expressed an interest in joining 4-H and since her mom has a rather grueling work schedule, Grandma will be acting as project leader and "mom" in mentoring her in a poultry project.
Besides my past interest and experience with poultry (chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese), I was a rabbit breeder and exhibitor for 44 years and also had a small swine operation for 18 years. The focus will now be on chickens, but I do maintain an interest in these other animal husbandry areas. I'm a web designer running my own modest business - Rio Paso Web Design, and also serve as web master for a number of non-profit websites (mostly rabbit clubs). It's great that I have had the opportunity to meld my business with my extra curricular interests.
Anyway, my purpose in joining BYC is to get to know other chicken folks in Texas and elsewhere.
Thanks!
Charlcie
