I just wanted to thank you for giving me ALL the knowledge I could need to feel confident in raising my hens! I'm two weeks in, and love them dearly! You are helping me make smart decisions for them daily!

I agree! I'm 4 days from the arrival of my chicks and I feel prepared because of all the great information and community here!

I couldn't agree more and am so thankful for BYC!!

I'm a fourth grade science/math teacher and we've incubated and hatched chicks for the last four years for our life science unit. In the past, we always gave the babies to a student, faculty member, etc. who had coops for them to live nice love, safe lives. But this year we only had one hatchling and this little chickie and our five year old son have become inseparable (ok, me too). I didn't have the heart to give the baby away so I approached my principal with the idea of keeping it at school during the school year in a safe, moveable coop. She completely supported the idea...but that sent me into needing to learn the whole big world of raising and caring for chickens. For every question I Googled, BYC was always the first response and always had the best answer. I have learned so, so much and feel confident I can give our baby a happy and healthy home and life! So, thank you BYC community.

After visiting the coop where its mommy and daddy reside, and from comparing with pictures here, we believe it's a cross between a silkie and leghorn. Our baby was originally given the name Tweety by my classes, but now that it'll be living with us, its grown up name will be Clara Cluck if it's a pullet and maybe Foghorn if it's a cockerel (YAY BYC for teaching me the right terminology!!) It's a cuddler, follower, and loves to hang out on our shoulders and next to my hair...if I can keep it out of her beak..blah! It will be a month old tomorrow and we are all so excited for this journey we are taking as a family, and after this summer break...a school!

So, now that I've got the hang of taking care of her, my next project is to write a grant for her coop and decide which beautiful coop would be best for her and our school. I have to say, I never knew there could be so many beautiful chicken homes! And, I'm strongly considering getting her a buddy so she doesn't get lonely :)

Again, BYC, thanks so much for everything! I'll be around for sure...
