two days ago I picked up two chicks... a silky and a frizzle... their enjoying living in our house at the moment... I'm needing to learn a lot more before we get into any egg laying adventures... i live in a wooded area with lots of different predators so I want to make sure I've got everything built safely before we venture any further.

Hi and welcome to BYC

Here’s a good link where you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. Silkies & frizzles and Polish, are likely targets for predators because their big crests usually obscure their vision. And silkie wing feathers are not conducive to flying. They are best kept in secure runs with tops covered.

You may also want to check out the "Predators forum," for the best advice and suggestions for creating a Fort Knox coop and outdoor run.

Welcome to BYC! Congratulations on getting your chicks. If there’s one piece of advice I’d give it’s never underestimate those predators. Prevention is much better than cure. Great to have you in the flock :D
