Hi Friends,
I really enjoy the BackYard Chickens group! I have been raising and caring for chickens off and on for about 30 years now--the "off" period was when we lived in a large urban city and I could not keep any feathered friends. Glad to have moved back to the country. The first order of business was, of course, to purchase chickens! I now have a beautiful flock of 42 chickens of various ages. Professionally, I am a registered nurse and a licensed midwife.
We have a nice mix of laying hens and dual purpose hens. I think our family favorite is the bantam buff Cochins that we picked up a year ago at the local feed store. They are very sweet and friendly and they make devoted mamas, true to their breed. We now have some young chickens who were a cross between the Cochins and one of two very colorful roosters. The crossbred hens consistently have the buff coloration of the Cochin except that they have a small amount of black barring on their tail feathers. They have feathers on their feet, but not as densely as the mama hens. They are a little bigger than the Cochins. We also have two crossbred roosters that resulted in an intermediate size between the Cochin hens and the full-size roosters. One is very brightly colored and has a few feathers on his feet while his "brother" from the same hatch is an iridescent black rooster with feather "highlights" of deep, dark green and red. I would enjoy seeing more of this very interesting cross and hope that will happen next year.
We get a lot of eggs and use a fair amount of them for our family. The rest we give to our very kind neighbors, who never complain about all the crowing and clucking that goes on over here. It's nice to be in rural Utah again.
