I'm a brand new chicken owner and I'm totally in love with my chicks. We have 1 Black Australorp, 1 White Rock, 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte and 3 Blue Andalusians. They are three and a half weeks old.

I live on Cape Cod in Massachusetts where I work as a freelance journalist. As soon as I got my chickens I wrote a story for the Cape Cod Times newspaper about backyard chickens and included a shout out to this website, which I found incredibly helpful when my chicks first arrived.

Our chicks are still living in a coop in our basement, until a very secure permanent outside home is completed because I'm terrified of predators. My husband has already built a nifty mobile pen and yesterday was their first day outside.

I look forward to getting to know more people in this forum and thanks again for all the great advice and information.

Welcome to the world of chickens - it seems to be all I think about! Hope your hubby built a really big pen because if no one's told you, this place is chock full of enablers!

Wow, thanks for all the welcome love. I was surfing around the site looking for an answer to when I can be CERTAIN my chicks are actually all hens with no rooster mistakenly mixed in and all these messages came in.

I really don't want roosters, but I especially don't want my granddaughter's chick (named Tinkerbell) to be a rooster because that will put me in a bind.
