I just want to thank all of you knowledgeable folks with all of the incubation advice. I've been reading up on back threads dated back the beginning of the new BYC.

A friend of mine recently gave me a LG incubator. She had bought the fan for it but never put it in. So, DH put in the fan and I disinfected it to the best of my ability.

Plugged it in and let the temp stabilize. During this time, I 'made' a water weasel out of ziplock bags. Found a few river rocks to prop the egg carton with and to help stabilize the temp.

So now, I'm incubating my first batch of eggs from my own chickens! The temp is holding steady, the water weasel thing is just the coolest! I'm keeping the humidity around 40%.

So exciting and nerve wracking! Can't wait to see how I do.

DH is gonna build me a homemade incubator too! Thanks to all the info and great ideas that have been shared here.

I keep seeing water wessels mentioned but never read what they are for. Anyone care to inlighten me? What are the water wessels and what are the benifets of them?

I know exactly what you mean. I looked everywhere and finally found an old post with this link

Water Weasel Picture

I thought it was a special kind of sophisticated tool..... Anyway, I got in the truck and went to the Dollar store and sure enough, found one. It's in the incubator now.

I edited the link above because it links to another site with a poultry message board. I thought for sure I got the link from this site but maybe it was from a google search.

A Water Weasel is actually a kid's toy. It's made of a special rubber in a shape like an elongated cheerio. It's full of water, and sometimes come with glitter or little creatures in them. They slip out of your hands as they turn inside out over and over again.

The water weasel is simple to use. All you do is slip the probe of your digital thermometer into the weasel. Place it in your incubator just as if it was an egg. Once the weasel comes to the bator's temperature you'll have the temperature of the inside of your eggs.

I made my water weasel out of a ziplock bag and some shipping tape! It's working great so far. When I stumble upon a real water weasel, I'll get one or two.

This is what a water weasel looks like. Its the blue thing.
