I just can't beleive it.....I know cats are here and there all the time. This one I expected to be transient at best. In May of 2010 she turned up with 4 recently weaned kittens that she was still not so patiently teaching to hunt and ready to have fly the nest. She wasn't in poor health, niether were they. For ferile city strays they were VERY well off. We live in a densely packed residential neighborhood with a lot of old Victorian mansions converted into multi-family housing. There are always new strays abondonned, and we are suckers. I don't think she was recently abandonned because she was extremely street aware and wouldn't come near us. It took a while to tame her down to come near a food dish with us nearby. The kittens were another story altogether.

Eventually she chilled out and got accustomed to regular meals and semi-indoor life.....provided we let her roam when she wanted. And as soon as we could pick her up, I had her spayed. I couldn't have unending kittens on my tiny property. The stray kittens all got fixed as well.

For 10 months she lived in and out of the house. Mostly inside as winter got worse. By January we had another cat on our hands that was porky enough to need weight control. She was a solid 10 pounds and growing.

Sometime in February the weather warmed and we had a run of good days.....she wanted out and didn't come back for regular meals. It has been nearly 2 months and no sign of J.A.C. (Just Another Calico, on account that 5 of the 7 cats we have are calico by accident)

Tonight a friend of ours was out on the porch and a friendly calico came up and started yowling at him and wanted in the house. At first he was going to let it in and then thought it might not be one of ours.......low and behold it was our lost JAC! Barely a sliver of her old self....her hind quarters are sunk in, her hip and backbones show with fine distinction. Her cheeks are sallow and she weighs only about 4 pounds. She has never boon fond of "strangers". Specifically our friend on the porch...nor has she liked the other pets of the household much....but at the moment she is LOVING hugs and doesn't want to be anywhere but close!!! Anything warm is fair game.

We are so glad to know she is alive. All this time I was imagining her squashed under a dumpster or something. She is such a character and has brought us a wonderful brood of kids. We missed the imprinting age on her kittens, but despite that, they have NEVER taken a pass at our Silkies.....And they have 24/7 easy access to them. As a matter of a fact, Tulla will climb in the pen and eat and play "tag" with my girls.....and she follows them around the yard like a shepherd. JAC just doesn't eat them, and that is more than I expected from a skilled hunter.

We had one do that to us. He'd been gone for almost 3 months when I spotted him in the field next to our house! Little poop had been living there the whole time, probably finding some safety in a big barn on that property. He just didn't want to be an inside guy, so he didn't come home -- even though he could see us the whole time!!

Tuff! We caught him and brought him back in. He's finally back up to his normal weight and his fur looks nice again. But I dread spring just around the corner when he'll want out again

Silly cats....pfft what is up with all that defiant independance!? Just because it's warm and beautiful they want to go outside....and if you don't let them, they just get ticked off and pee on your couch.

So far miss J.A.C. is purrfectly happy to stay glued to our laps and sleep in between us like a three year old child after a nightmare. Can't imagine what she's been through....

That is great news!

My daughter's cat left just before Christmas and just came back last week! We are very happy to have him back and like your cat, he is underweight but we are working on that! My son's cat (the cats are brother's and both neutered) left the same time but hasn't came back yet. I really hope he does.

It warms me to hear another "incredible journey" story! Darned cats causing everyone so much worry. I hope your other missing souls find their way to health and safety. My J.A.C. is nearly back to her old ways of hating everything with four legs and hoovering everyones food if allowed half a second.....wouldn't have it any other way!!!

Usually when they completely disappear and come back so starved it means they got themselves stuck somewhere. I can't count how many times my tamest cat has nearly killed herself going in the old garage that's used for storage and only opened every few weeks. She likes to follow people everywhere and stuck her nose in everything. My younger one that doesn't roam far also disappeared for a month and was found in the neighbor's barn they had opened a month ago. All the buildings on my mom's property were designed with cat escape areas or the doors were left cracked because of the number of farm cats growing up that they lost to getting stuck in barns, sheds, etc... for months at a time.

Here's a new one, my mother in law has a cat my hubby named "General Sterling Price" He went missing a while back and she worried he was dead. Low and behold The General came back. I told her he has been away filming the new TRUE GRIT and then had to go to movie premiers. He was gone a long time.

I had a friend who saw her cat get smashed by snow sliding off the roof. They dug and dug and dug and couldn't find him; this was in Alaska and the whole metal roof let go at once. She was very upset, this was the sweetest kitty imaginable, and was often the barn kitty at the local boarding place. That spring, they were all very surprised when he showed up at the door, starved, matted and horrible looking, but otherwise in perfect health. He hadn't gotten hurt by the falling snow, merely trapped. I think he lost the tips of his ears, but survived many years afterward.

I glad your kitty came home, and I hope she has many happy years.

"trapped in an avalanche of snow" .....what an amazing story! I've often worried for any living soul that's on the ground when my roof lets loose it's snow...it is so heavy and iced over and sounds like a freight train when it comes down. That's one tough cat.

All the cats on here are wiley characters. Wish they wouldn't make us worry so much though! Good thinking of one responder's mother to leave escape routes for animals.
