Llamas are very social animals and absolutely need the companionship of other animals to do well!!! The good news is that the other animal(s) do not have to be llamas. This is why llamas make such great guard animals, they adopt other species as their family.Hi, very interesting and informative. Do Llamas get a bit lonely without company of their own kind? I used to have goats and they're so much happier when they have other goats for company. I have much to learn about Llamas...
Hi, I use M autorun killer, AVG free edition, and c-cleaner to keep problems off my computer. I also use chrome for my browser. Any time you use netzero or other free internet service, you will have ads, but when you add some of the tool bars or allow them to be added, they will often plague you with ads which is how they make money.I HATE THESE "JAGUAR" ADS!!! THEY ARE GUMMING UP MY COMPUTER SO THAT IT TAKES UP TO 5 MINUTES TO LOAD EACH PAGE!![]()
Now that I have that out of my system, I have a small or 'mini' llama who actually eats very little. Perhaps even less than the sheep. He eats with them so it's hard to be exact.
No grain, ever. Just good grass hay. Alfalfa can be a treat, but not a staple. Moofy gets a handful of alfalfa pellets a day for a treat (I'd swear iI could hear him giggle when he sees me coming with it!)
I give granular salt/minerals for sheep (NO COPPER) free choice. Llamas, like sheep, can be sensitive to too much copper.
If you like, you can give bagged llama feed, as a treat or supplement. Since it is a complete ration, you would be sure to you were giving them everything they need. I haven't done this, though.
Primarily, llamas are wild animals, and rich diets will make them overwieght. That is why good grass hay is best.
When looking for a guard animal, look for one that is at least 10 months old, that has been raised with other llamas. A female or gelded male is best. An intact young male will have to be gelded by the time he is 1 1/2 years old or he will try to mount any female animal close to his size, sometimes with tragic results.
Good luck with your search!
It should be a standard donkey and best are the burros from the blm sales. The miniature donkeys have no natural preds where they come from (islands in the Med) and will run from a pred. Donkeys are very smart and usually do fine with other animals and can become pests though and will figure out how to open gates and doors if they are not set up properly.I hear a Donkey makes a good guard too. They protect livestock. I don't know how they will do with chickens?
