I am so new that I don't even have them yet! They should be shipping next Monday or Tuesday, so in a week I will have baby chicks! I ordered 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes, 2 Golden Laced Wyandottes and one Easter Egger.
I have my brooder all set up in the garage, or nearly set up at least, it'll be done before the weekend. And my coop is in progress (Garden Coop - at the dreaded post digging part)
I found out about this website when looking up laws for my town (Hens are allowed so long as you name them (thus they are pets))
I am very excited to get started with this... I've been wanting to have chicks for most of my life - my grandfather used to raise them in the basement after they were hatched in the schools and then bring them to the farms. I have fond memories of the little fluff balls.
I have one brooder question: I am planning on using a cardboard box with 3 inches of pine shavings on the bottom in the garage. Do I need to put anything under it to keep it from getting cold from the cement floor of the garage? I have a 250 watt red heat light for the top.
