We built our chicken coop/run under our deck -- attached to our house and right under our front door. The deep litter method better work (with minimal smells) -- or I'm going to be in a lot of trouble!

Our seven chicks are 5-7 weeks old and have been kept in our air-conditioned living room until the coop was finished. It's almost 100* here! How to best transition them to the outside?

So glad I'm here; have learned a lot from you all already. Thanks! -- Susan in Charlotte

You can put them pout for a couple of short periods before moving them if you wish, but this may not be necessary. They will have trouble with the heat. Be sure they have good shade and plenty of water to drink, and a good breeze.

I only change my DL once a year, but my coop is huge (there used to be a lot more chickens) and very breezy. I use pine shavings, some hay, and a few sprinkles of pelletized lime if I smell much of anything. Odor is mostly a function of space, IMO, as long as the litter is dry.
