We were out of town for a few days and had the neighbor kid take care of the chickens while we were gone. Returned this afternon and thought it was strange when I walked in back to check on the chickens and they all were in the coop. Went into the coop to collect eggs and noticed the girls were kind of restless. As I left the coop and walked around the run I noticed this possum hunkered down next to the fence, inside of the run. I opened the door and the chickens all ran out while the possum hissed at me. I closed the door and ran back in the house and grabbed my .22 and a few shells to stop the hissing.
After talking to my neighbor I learned that he thought something was up this morning when he noticed the chickens were still in the coop. He thought the auto pop door had failed but when he checked door was open and the chickens were roosted. He thought they were just sleeping in this morning... not a chicken guy.
I don't know how they did it but somehow they survived the day with a possum in their run. I checked out the coop and run to see how he got in. I have been building a new coop and had left about a foot of the galvanized roofing material loose on the run while working on the coop, forgot to screw it back down. Oops my bad.
Think I just got very lucky or one my hens is super woman and whipped that possum's behind, he looked a little exhausted and looking for a place to hide.
