What is the worst molt you have seen on one of your hens? Do you have one that goes bare? Or maybe one that seems to only lose a few at a time? What about that one that you could swear a chicken got killed last night but nope she's just molting?

I don't have one yet that bares it all for the world to see most of my girls goes naked neck for a few weeks drop thier tail feathers and pretty soon look normal again. But i do have one that seems to lose more feathers then she has but barely looks like she's lose a single one. Well that is unless you get a good look at her.

Black Betty is a black astralorph/easter egger and at first glance you would likely never guess she had started her molt. But the coop floor tells a different story, she's my only black hen so i can't attribute the seemingly pounds of black feathers under her corner spot on the roost to anyone but Black Betty. And unless you get a good look at her it's hard to believe she's lost a single one, but that's when you notice this normally big round plush bird looks like a small, thin, almost sickly looking version of herself. No bald spots just a little thinning around her waddle and a dry feathered version off what a wet cat looks like after a bath.

So who's molt intrigues you the most? Do you baffle for a few days trying to figure out who's feathers are everywhere? Or do you look at your girls and say oh it's that time of year?

I haven't had a completely bald chicken yet either. Some of my turkeys can get pretty bald though during their molts. I am always relieved when everyone gets a fresh new coat of feathers on.

Sometimes I find piles of feathers that make me count my chickens to make sure no one was snatched.

With more than 120 birds I'm always thankful it's windy in the fall or I'd be buried in feathers.

Snowy. One of my oldest hens, and always the first to start molting. She's a very, very slow molter. Takes her at least 4 months to finish, and it's a very gradual molt. It always starts with the tail.

I've got one like that, looks totally normal right now still except she has no tail feathers. It's really funny how each one molts differently

One year I had a chicken who's bum feathers were picked off by another chicken, went broody and therefore plucked her breast feathers, and then started molting. I don't think I have a picture.
