The Hens viciously attacked the Rooster!

I'm not sure why they did it, but I found our rooster yesterday late afternoon with a very bloody waddle and a blood spotty comb. The hens were still pecking at him and still trying to get at him until I picked him up and got him away from them. He didn't even try to defend himself with them and was letting them do it. (Which I thought was really odd.) He had blood all down the front of his chest. He has a few spots on his comb and they really did a job on his waddle (I think that's what it is called). I put corn starch on it last night and he's in medical confinement in the garage until it's completely healed. Is there anything else that I need to do? I saw an article online that said I needed to cut the injured pieces off but I really don't trust the source. That would be cutting off his entire waddle. It's like they took the top layer of skin off of the whole thing.

This morning I put some more corn starch on it. I'm really afraid to do anything else to it until someone with a little more chicken experience suggests anything. Should I wash it? Peroxide? I'm at a loss with this. I feel so bad for him because I know that has got to hurt! He's crowing twice as much today as he usually does and is making a noise like he's crying. It's really awful.

We love this guy to pieces and I hate thinking that he's in pain at all.

I took these pics yesterday about an hour after we discovered it. Any suggestions anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you. After reading more after I posted this, I cleaned him with the peroxide. He actually stood still for me to do that which really surprised me. We have always handled him a lot so maybe that's why he let me do that. He's eating, drinking and still pooing solid like he always does which I'm guessing are all good signs.

Neosporin sounds like a good idea, I'll do that. I think he'll be OK as long as it doesn't get infected.

He's "complaining" a lot today and I'm taking that as promising. Hubby suggested that I put the tractor that we keep the meaties in when we have them up against the coop run so he can still see the hens but they can't get to him. We are guessing that his crying, extra crowing and complaining is because he's separated from the hens right now and not used to being alone. I can't help but feel sorry for the guy. He's such a sweet rooster and very well behaved.

I'm so sorry that happened to your little guy! I can't figure out went they would have done that.

Maybe you should keep an eye on him for any signs of illness just in case.

May he get well soon!

Are you sure he couldn't have been injured by something else and then the hens started on him because of the blood that was already there? Just a thought, hope he gets better soon

Yeah. That's smart, because from the pics it looks like they really made him bleed. They might have started on him after he was already bleeding. Do they free range?
