I told my co working that I was going to set some eggs, so she started asking general questions so she asked how much the eggs cost, I told her about a dollar an egg. Then we chatted about how you have to take care of the temp and humidity for 21 days. She said wow that seems like a lot of work, how much can you sell the chicks for. I said "about a buck a chick" I will never forget the look on her face.

Hahah. . . I guess to me just as long as you have the properly reliable incubator and some eggs that aren't common chicken breeds, you get a lot more out of it than normal.

Then again I'd never buy eggs to sell the chicks. . . Absolutely no profit there.

But, yes, there is a joy a lot of people don't understand - Last night I mentioned on Facebook that I saw a dozen eggs sell for nearly $900 on an auction - A lot of people thought that was sad. I told them it actually wasn't - If you consider, the chicks will grow up and each dozen they lay will also be quite expensive.

obviously I dont do it for the money just thought it was cute, I have bought eggs for less and sold chicks for more. Seems I always pay more for ducklings and chicks then I could ever sell mine for. Good thing its for love not money. My incubator has been great so far anyhow........

I think for most of us who hatch it is all about the love. . . I've spent SOOO much on hatching eggs, and SO much on the feed for those chicks, then SO much for the focus on the perfection to my standards of the flock in the end, and honestly there isn't THAT much that comes out of it. Really, the selling is just about earning back the money you lost.

If I did this for profit and money, I wouldn't be anywhere near as dedicated to the precision of perfection.

But, yeah, even a good incubator can need extra attention. . . For example, my current batch of Polish eggs I have no clue why - Need to have their water increased every ooh 2 hours. The humidity shoots up, then sinks down, then shoots up, then sinks down. . . Never had it so short on other hatches, and I really don't think I have a leak or something in my bator. Maybe my eggs are just whales.
