Finally got the coop & run for the chicks finished yesterday. We gathered them up while they were trying to make a prison break from the brooder and put them in their new luxury accomodatations. After about 10 minutes of huddling and muttering about what the warden (me) was up to, a few ventured into the run, and then the party was on!

They got a couple of hours to enjoy their freedom before the sun went down. I thought I'd have to gather them up and put them in the coop, but first one, then four others hopped up on the gang plank, and after a few minutes, started to go into the coop to roost up. I ended up only having to gather up 3 of the chicks and put them in.

This morning, Borage and Nettles already had their heads out the pop hole and once I coaxed them out (gave them a little push), the rest of the Hellions followed suit. One of them spied the familiar red feeder and they ran for their breakfast.

The Warden and the Hellions are happy. For 'stupid' birds, they figured things out just fine on their own. And I'm popping my buttons with pride for our clever little flock. Tonight, they're going to have a new discovery - a bit of scratch.

What good chicken parents you are. I love when the hens get it together witht he Program. Aren't they amazing?

They are amazing! The older hens always come up with new ways to forage and goof about & they make us laugh, but we weren't expecting the level of instinct and reasoning these 6 week old pullets showed. I may have to name them something besides the Hellions.
