Hooray, my coop is finally under construction! After months of terrible rain, dangerous flooding and flying bricks, the weather has finally cleared!

The neighbor's wall is still down along the side of the house, and we can't touch it until the insurance is finished deciding whose responsibility it is. Them behind us have pulled the fence back up, but it still needs to be reenforced. We'll be putting up our own fence anyway. Coop building has been scheduled for months, so we have to do what we can now.

The side here will open completely for easy cleaning, and so the perch can be removed and replaced when it gets too grubby.

I'm worried that the carpenter made the nest boxes too shallow. It's not finished and sealed yet, so there is plenty of time for refittings.

The baban was cross because the carpenter stacked lumber on her trampoline. She's very excited about the chickens, along as they wear knickers - she was specific on this point. We've explained that chickens don't really need clothing like big girls do, but she's very hard to argue with.

You can see in the back where there is no fence between us and the empty house on the other side - more fence building!

Reb Brown is flight commander at the chicken patrol station (first person to get the reference, let me know!)

Looking good! Where is cymru?
Wales, United Kingdom. I live on the lovely coast in a lovely little village surrounded by hill farms. We were worried the other day, my wife and I, that the chooks might be too noisy for the neighbours. But when we went out to look at the coop, the sheep in the hills above the house were making such a racket themselves that I don't think anyone will hear a few hens!

The carpenter hasn't been back all week, and when I tried to contact him I was told that his phone is broken and he has no internet.

He actually started two days later than scheduled because he hadn't gotten around to getting the lumber, so we're already delayed. My wife says if he's not back by Monday we should fire him. Although we don't have all his resources and we'd only be able to get in an hour or so each day between work and dinner, we could finish ourselves. If it came down to it.

So, we did sack the carpenter in the end. He stopped coming entirely, and when we asked why he said openly that he'd found work that paid better. Nice to know where you stand!

We've been finishing it ourselves with the boy's help. Yesterday was for fixing down all the weatherboard, building and hanging the door, and today was weather proofing! That is what makes me the most angry - if he'd done the job on time it would have been sealed and watertight before the storms came back. We wouldn't have had to wrap the whole thing in tarps and raise it off the wet ground on bricks. And because the weatherboard wasn't all fixed down, some panels ripped off in the high wind before we could cover it.

I've changed the nest boxes to one big one, since there will be only three hens. We'll treat the inside tomorrow.
