Last night I forgot to close the door on the coop.. 10 30pm and the alarm goes off.. we jump out of bed.. hear the chickens going nuts and husband runs out with his gun.. the dumb birds are blind at night and cant make it out of the coop.He opens the big door from the top and there is a possum inside .He nails it and we try to find girls.
By then they all have scattered of course. Roo is hiding in the tall gras and I find HENrietta in the driveway bleeding.Possum got her wing and bit her. She is squaaking like a mad woman .Poor girl. The other 2 white hens are under the porch laying low and none got hurt.
I checked her out and she has a small bitewound right on her wing at her joint. Nothing big , thank goodness. I slap some neosporin on it .Today we looked at her wound and its allready dried up and scabbing over some. No swelling or anything. She will be ok.

But they all lost a few feathers , the inside of the coop looked like they had a pillow fight.

I allways been so good about locking them in a nite .. one time I forget ..And this happends. I appologized to the birds but they all flipped me off.

So they got left over noodles, watermelon and I didnt take their eggs today.

As much as I hate that alarm going off.. it prolly saved the birds last night .
20 bucks well spend.

I was so mad at myself for forgetting ..Now they dont want to go in there and we have to round em up and make em go in there.Their safe heaven has been violated and it will be a few days before they trust it enough again to sleep in there ...sigh

CHECK THE DOORS ..

Glad things turned out to be OK. The other morning, just after dawn I woke up and thought, "Strange, it sounds like the chickens are out...." Then I realized that I had not closed the coop and they WERE indeed out and about. Lucky for all of us that everything was ok!

BTW, what kind of alarm went off? Motion, sound?

Motion .Its a portable small unit from Harbor freight..One of those wireless driveway thingies. We have it set up in fron of it so if something walks by it goes off.

We had a bad raccon year so far. I am running out of places to bury them. I think we are up to 13 or so now.

I've always wondered about the amount of feathers that come off a chicken. When I was a little boy, a possum had got in our chicken coop, and we heard them just in time to save a pair of bantys...out of about 8 chickens. And I just couldnt believe how many feathered littered the coop! The birds still looked normal except..well dead, but they looked like they had all their feathers, idk does anyone know what I mean? I just didnt realize how many feathers a chicken really has.

OH! Sorry about this whole thing, atleast nobody was killed

I am so glad that you have saved your girls just in time. Sometimes we all need a little wake-up situation. I am pretty sure that you will not forget to close your coop door again.
