Glad all of your chickens are OK! It's a good thing you set up that alarm.
In 2007, my dad left the ramp to the chicken coop up(with the door locked and shut) and a weasel climbed up and chewed a hole and killed 2 hens(all the hens we had...we had just started raising chickens) and the next night got our best rooster...leaving us with 2 RIR roosters.
Now, we have a lamp in the coop, and we put the ramp up every night. We leave the small chicken door open so they can get out of the coop if needed, since they can see with the light on. And the coop is right near the house, and whenever the rooster or hens see something, they start cackling really loudly and it lets us know something's wrong.
Maybe we should see if any of those alarms are sold as an extra precaution.
Okay--where exactly is that alarm set up? I'm very intrigued by that, how would you set it up so any predator would set it off, but not the chickens? I could sleep better with that, and all the coons around here...
Mine is set up in the yard with a can of wet cat food in front of the coop. The coop is solid wood , so it cant detect any movement inside , just on the ouside with the catfood. The reason we are putting out bait now is because the coons keep trying to drag the chickenfeed feeder thru the fenceline and it gets all spilled.
The sending unit is set in front of the can of food. So once soemthing goes in front of it, it sets the receiver off in the house.
Its really simple.. and its wireless so you are not hindered by wires or anything.
Only bad thing is , the dinger is annoying as heck and I usualy put a pillow or a blanket over the reciever to its not so loud.
wow! glad all the ladies - well most of them - are safe! i guess you can feel better knowing that their coop is secure??!?!
sorry about the pillow fight in the coop - i kept telling people (my know everything MIL) that possums are bad news for hens and they (she) doesnt believe me! glad we are on the lookout for them possums. we had one a couple months ago - i set the dogs out and my hubby winged 'em.
