Hey there, I am currently in the market for some chickens, and expect to purchase some in the next few weeks. I am buying a variety of Orpingtons, Australorps and Cochins. The problem I have is that I would also like to get a rooster to protect the girls and just to have around. I am not interested in breeding or anything like that. I have heard from some of my friends that some roosters can be very aggressive towards the chickens, and antisocial towards you. I would really like one, so I am just wondering if anyone has any suggestions about the kind of rooster, if any, I should get, or any other general info that I might need to know. The thought alos crossed my mind that getting a bantam rooster might be a good idea with regular chickens. Not sure about that, so any advice would be great. Thanks!

Not interested in breeding, huh?

Rooster + Broody Hen = setting eggs = chicks = more chickens = More roosters + More broody hens..... & the life cycle of chicken math continues.

I've had wonderful Cochin bantam roo's & EE roos tend to be placid to. I'd go with the Orpington or the Cochin, but thats just me

Every breed you're getting is known for being sitters. I see a lot of chicken math in your future :)
I'd go for a big, lazy standard Cochin. All of mine were gentle giants, impressive to look at, but very good to the girls and the people.
