San Antonio/Bexar County has only been historically on the edge of the range of the Giant Cicada "Chicharra". For the past few years they've been expanding their range into the Hill Country and now this is what you hear outside along with the usual dog day cicada. They are pretty awesome sounding but usually impossible to see in the tops of the trees. If you go farther south towards the coast and Brush Country, you can stop your car on the side of the road and the noise of these things is so loud outside you can hardly carry on a conversation. They are about 2 to 3 inches long.

Hi Nomibear - It is nice to hear from another Texan. I'm currently in the chicken planning phase and working on converting a covered patio into an open air chicken coop. I plan on ordering from Carter's Legacy Farms in Alabama when I'm finished. They have been super nice and helpful in answering a lot of my questions, and I've heard really great things about their farm. My chicken wish list changes but think I've settled on Australorp, Ameracauna, RIR or Red Sex Link, Barred Rock and Mille Fleur D'uccles for the kids.

I checked out your chicken photos Nomibear and love your chicken guard dog. Does he live full time in the poultry yard or mostly at night for predator deterent? He certainly looks like he takes his job seriously!

What part of South Texas are you in?

Thank you Tina. Nala does take her job very serious. She was almost too protective of me and our children when visitors came over. Never bit anyone, but would act aggressive. She lives in there with them full time now. Other then not wanting to share her food, she is a perfect angel with them. I live a ways down 37, just before you get to Pleasanton:) I'm at the CityBase On Milatary area several days a week.
