I've watched Redtail Hawks land within 20 feet of me. Near L.A. in Southern California. Seems most wild animals here are used to people. I got within 50 feet of a coyote the other day before he saw me and bolted.

The only thing I really never wanted to meet was the Hyenas. A wild animal park lost 2 or 3 during a bad storm. For years they would take animals all over where I lived. I would rather take on a bear then a hyena. Anything that can stare down a lion let alone attack them outright gets respect in my book.

I'm in the country too. Not too far from Wolfpacker and Southern28. Our hawks are bold too. We've had two pairs fighting over territory in our backyard. One day when we were out in the pool (with my 10 year old making plenty of noise), a red shouldered hawk landed right on top our coop and wouldn't leave until I got about 10 feet away. Even then it only went to a nearby tree where it stayed for a long time. That's when I decided not to free range.

Yeah, not just a city hawk thing. I'm in the country too (not crop country, but some decent-sized properties out here and woods all around me) and the red-tail that tried to get my chickens when I was outside building the coop almost flew into my head afterwards.

He hasn't been back though, that I've seen. I only "free range" while I'm outside with them, and usually only if there are doves or crows roosting on the lines, so I know I didn't just miss seeing a hawk.

I think I'm going to have to worry more about my kitten for a while than hawks though. He tackled one of my chickens yesterday. He's only playing and it's what the ducks do to him, but I am NOT going to allow it! (I think he knows that now, but ... cats are cats.)

Hey ya'll in NC. I live in a small neighborhood, I'm in the county, but only 2 miles from town and we have seen Red Tailed Hawks in our back yard, A Red Fox in our drive way, and we have some big owl here too. I've seen opposums eating with the yard cats, so we have a mixed bundle here. I have my run covered and I never free range. LOL

I free range. Have hawks and stuff but also have two huge dogs. We used to have possums, coons and skunks when we first moved in. I even wrote a peom about a possum in my trash can.

Unfortuntely wildlife seems to be creeping into the suburbs. A few years ago I had a sharp shinned hawk kill a dove in my front yard. I was kinda felt sorry as I just threw some bird seed on the ground for the mourning doves, then swoosh I heard a comotion and I saw this small hawk no bigger than the dove with it on the ground. The dove was dead and I watched the hawk, in its own way fascinated by this encounter. He got kinda iratated and left, Bird feeders and big fat ole city squirrels are prime targets for these birds of prey.
