This is the longest hatch ever. The first chick pipped on Tuesday morning and one pipped last night. This means we are on hour 48 or so.
Interesting findings.
All the eggs from my most dominant hen have hatched.
Nearly all the eggs from the rest of my hens have hatched.
NONE of the eggs from my friend's hens have hatched, although one of them has pipped this am. Candling earlier revealed these eggs were well along in development. In fact, it looks like they got nearly all the way there, but they did not do the internal pip.
Ideas? My friend's hens do not have access to greens. Could it be a vitamin deficiency? I would blame my faulty incubation procedures except for the fact my eggs hatched for the most part....
By the way, final tally right now is Thelma has 6 beautiful chicks, and we are hoping for one more today. She is being a terrific mother. I took her and the babies out of the nest box this am and re-established the group on the floor where chicks can reach food and water. A couple of the first-hatched fellas have already been exploring a few inches from mom. There are two fuzzy yellows which are the hybrids between NHRed and Americauna, 3 "chipmunks" (what I call the classic Americauna chick) and a grayish-yellow, also Americauna. All are dry, fluffy and active this am.
