It is day 22 of my Speckled Sussex eggs in the incubator and nothing is happening! I think I have been keeping up with the temperature and humidity pretty well, but there is no rocking or any other signs of them wanting to come out. I haven't tried candling them to see if they are good, but 6 bad eggs is alot. I want to know if it is normal for them to hatch late like this, or what i am doing wrong. I hope they are not bad

so many variables

you need to candle to help see whats going on.

1. Where did you get the eggs?
2. What sort of incubator?
3 Does the incubator have a fan?
4 What temp were you running?
5 What sort of thermometer?
6 Was it calibrated?
7 How did you turn eggs?
8 Are the eggs fertile?
7 What humidity was the bator?

I have my batch of eggs hatching .One pipped on day 22 ,one hatched on day 23 ,and two hatched today(first and second pipped)
Today is day 24. :). I'd leave em in there till day 30.( 27 at least) only one of mine had veins near the air pocket that I could see, and none of rocked and
Rolled that saw..... Just leave them in there and follow the procedure .. ;)

Good luck and God bless!! :)

or you could assess what you are doing so you could improve next time around

unless you candle or open the eggs you will never know. At this point I would candle

thanks guys. i will try candling on day 23 {tommarow} and to you ozexpat it is a old stirafoam hova-bator without a fan and yes i was turning them 3 times a day until day 18. When i candle what should they look like inside? I am guessing that i should see veins. I got the eggs at my pet chicken so that means yes they are fertil and i try to keep the temp at around 99 but some times it gets down to around 95. The humidity is what it should be: a bit more than 50 until day 18 then i boosted it up to 75. I have a old Acu Rite thermometer that i should have replaced {But i didnt}. I hope my little chicks are ok

Thanks for giving more information

Sally Sunshine's article, Hatching 101 linked in my signature says:

With a
Forced Air Incubator
(fan model) you can get the best hatch rate by keeping the temperature at 99.5º F. throughout the entire incubation period. HOWEVER, when using a
Still Air incubator
(no fan) at 102º F. The reason for different temperatures is that with a fan model the circulating air warms all around the egg while still air temperatures are warmer at the top of the egg than at the bottom. The temperature is measured at the level where the embryos develop (at the top of the egg). A high temperature tends to produce early hatches. A consistently cooler temperature tends to increase incubation times and produce weakened chicks. In both cases the total chicks hatched will be reduced.

So from what you have said, you have been running cold. Expect to hatch on day 23 or day 24

There are great candling pics in there as well.

Good luck.

FYI, My Pet Chicken eggs have just as much chance of being fertile as ant shipped egg. Any hatch over 50% with shipped eggs is a good hatch. I have set 48 shipped eggs and produced 4 chickens.

Candling is really important with shipped eggs as not only do you reduce your expectations when you see clears, blood rings and early quitters, you get to assess the air cell and how to deal with the individual egg,

thank you
i will tell you tomarow what happens with the candling
