I finally let my guineas out to free range, and they have been staying very close to the chicken pen, even wanting to go in with the chickens (they were not in with them before). They've been getting more used to me and while they dont exactly come for petting, they don't panic when I go near them anymore. When I go out and feed, I say "chicky, chicky" when I am going to feed chickens and "guinea bird, guinea bird" when I feed the guineas. Well, they do seem to know the difference now! The chickens get excited just to see me, gluttons that they are, but the guineas do wait till I call them to feed. I wasn't sure if this was fluke or learning, but it seems to me that they are actually responding to the call because I have mixed it up, and fed the birds in different order and the barn cats etc. the guineas only come running when I do the guinea call.
