Welcome to BYC! Have fun here!Hello, we are avid chicken-fans and finally have our own property and coop! We've been around chickens for many years and always wanted our own (mostly to ensure they have the level of care we prefer!)
We keep a garden as well and are in the process of establishing a permaculture food-forest on our little 1/4 acre. The hens love it so much in the backyard, they don't even try to leave! Our girls are about a year old and we just got 3 Welbar chicks from the farmstore today. Going to try and set them under a very broody hen while dark tonight. (If it doesn't work out, we have the setup to raise them the other way.) I didn't know Welbars were rare, but that explains why they were $10 each!
I had the instinct that chicks arrived at the farm store--we are in thier text notification group but nothing was sent. Still, we stopped by and there were day-old Welbars, perfect! I will post in the Welbar thread as well but one of them is cream; I am reading now that perhaps that is a roo! We shall see. Looking to add more dark brown eggs as we have mostly blue eggs from our 8 americauna girls. The Welbar is fascinating and we feel lucky to find day-olds nearly next-door to us and while our hen is still brooding away.
We will keep you posted on their progress!
