I second the carpet. I finally gave up with laying straw, hay, etc only to find it on the ground. I put carpet pieces in and no more problems. I did have 3 hens in one box at once all trying to lay yesterday. I ended up with 2 beautiful eggs and one very broken one. There were 3 other nest boxes open to use at the time. Silly chickens.

The carpet is working out great!! I occasionally get broken eggs, but I think it's also from too many hens in one nest box. they have 6 to lay in, but like to join eachother in one. My ds went to check the coop yesterday and my little red cochin was sitting on 6 eggs! One eneded up broken because everyone wanted to use 1 nest box.
