Hi everyone! we have been looking for a same sex pair of Dumbo rats for months with no luck. Found one breeder about an hr away but they would set up times for us to go and visit and it would fall through on there end numerous times.

Finally just last weekend we decided just fancy rats would do. I found a family that were giving away a female pair of fancy rats, 6 months old and ver friendly, daughter apparently has allergies to them. SO we went and picked up George and Chewy, who became Bethany and Fay at our house. This family also had a young male siamese rat, he has not been handled, maybe only 12 weeks old, so we brought him home too. All free, cages included. His name is Luca.

So on Sunday I happened to notice an ad where a family was looking to rehome their rats. 1 adult female dumbo and four adult male dumbo rexs!

I responded to the ad and now these rats are coming to live with us. They range in age from 6 months to 1.5years, are extremely friendly and handled often.

Yesterday I spent the day making a cage that I felt would be of adequate size to house 4 or 5 males in (5 if our siamese male can be successfully introduced to them as I hate seeing rats living alone). I am really pleased with my handy-work, using some small rabbit cages(1.5 by 2ft) we had here plus some hardware cloth and the crimping tool. I made a huge cage with 4 levels, house, hammocks, rope ladders and 12 square feet of usable floor space! I also have plans to enlarge it when I can find some used rabbit cage sof the same size, making another tower similar to the first and attaching it with a tunnel!

Anyways they are arriving tonight around 630. I'll try to post pics tonight!

My DD has 11 rats. They are wonderful pets. When she got her first 2 I was skeptical. I thought why rats! But she has had them for over a year and now I know why people keep them. They are so sweet and smart. She got another last night. A male albino. She aslo has 2 hairless. Congrats on your new babies. And your cage sounds great too.

I have had rats on and off for over 15 years!

People have given me all of these cages, besides as a trasportation cage I think this size is too small for anything!

Anyways we are excited, people always look at me strange and I find myself constantly explaining how rats make better pets than hamsters, don't bite, don't smell when cared for properly, can be trained to do tricks and are very much like tiny tiny dogs. The other misconception..They carry disease. You are actually less likely to get sick from your properly cared for pet rats than you are your dog. People don't listen though, they have their minds made up, oh well there loss

My housemate has three rats. All were the result of an "oops" litter from a feeder rat for my ball python (sweet girl, she now lives with my sister and her rats). Since we've handled his ratties since birth, they are so people friendly it is insane. I love them to pieces, they are such sweethearts.

We like to take "rat naps" sometimes, more like dozing. Basically napping in the spare room all decked out for the chinchilla (yes, the chinchilla has an entire room to romp) with the rats lose. Not while the chin is in there, of course! So between running all over ramps, cinder blocks, and toys, they always come back to their people to check in, haha.

They are here and we love them! They are so BIG (except the baby) and friendly, here are a few pics, will have to get better ones tomorrow! with something for size comparison so you get a better idea of there size!

we need to come up with 5 names! ( excuse the spaghetti sauce on the kids faces, the rats were delivered right as we were eating supper)
The female not pictured is a dumbo siamese, There is the male that is a dumbo siamese. A black rex dumbo not pictured. A siamese baby dumbo (not pictured). And my favorite, the rex dumbo pictured. He is so big and calm and gentle, he is alos a weird color..appears white but is actually a really light grey. He reminds me of dryer lint!
