Being new to Quail, I have been poking through the internet in search of all the information I can get about Coturnix.
I've learned a lot in the last few weeks, but I recently found a few pages that have very conflicting information about the thickness of quail eggs.

Example 1: http://www.cityfarmer.org/quail2.html The last paragraph before the list of suppliers, the writer suggests that quail eggs are so tough you need a steak knife to open them.
Example 2: http://www.thatquailplace.com/quail/coturnix/coturn2.htm In the first paragraph, the writer suggests that extra care needs to be taken with the eggs because they break more easily than chicken eggs.

Which is true?

Thanks,

I hard boiled, peeled, and ate my first quail eggs this morning for breakfast. I think the author in the first article prefers using a steak knife to saw through them to crack them instead of the conventional method of cracking them on the edge of a hard object. Quail eggs have thinner shells than chickens so you do need to be more careful when handling them and they are easier to crack, either intentionally to eat them or unintentionally while handling hatching eggs.

The outer shell is much thinner than a chicken egg, but the inner membrane is a bit thicker than the same.
They tend to balance each other out.
I use a stake knife to hack into a coturnix egg for frying or other.

Yup. That tough inner membrane is handy when you drop an egg accidentally. It cracks, but doesn't completely splatter. I found this out yesterday

Thanks for the interesting information. I have buttons and at the moment they are popping out the eggs. I have been so gentle to them, because I am use to handling canary eggs (the buttons roomies in their aviary). Canary eggs or so fragile - if you gently pick it up the wrong way - splat.
