Surely I'm not the only one who has chickens that go nuts over cat food. I know what I have to do. But its cats vs birds here. Gosh, I think my cats were the ones that gave All cats that first name. So frustrating!!
My chickens LOVE cat food; I buy an inexpensive dry cat food and feed them a big plastic cupful at least a couple of times a week during the cold weather. They also love to eat any leftover canned food my cats have left.
When Kitty was small we fed her right outside the door, until we realized the dogs were eating her food whenever we let them out. We moved her food to a high window ledge and it was safe right up until the time my chickens discovered it. Being heavy birds my chooks can't actually fly up to get it, but they take turns hopping up until one of them knocks the dish down, then they feast. Poor Kitty. She keeps having to climb higher and higher just to get a decent meal.
I know, its sad. I make sure I feed my cats in the wee AM before I let the chickens out and of course at chicky bedtime. I really do try and take the time to give the cats a little lunch break. My birds are becoming surprisingly tame at high noon!
