Thin Egg Shells

An update for everyone.

Her condition never improved despite the calcium tablets. And in the past couple of days she became very sick.

A trip to the vet confirmed this hen has Egg Yolk Peritonitis. There are two eggs backed up in her system! Basically the vet said she either needs a hormone implant to stop her laying or euthanasia. I opted for the hormone implant because I really like this hen. The vet suggested a week of rest while the implant kicks in and then her prognosis is good. Although when the hormone implant wears off I'll need to decide if I get another one ($$) or have her put down.

I just read that Limestone grit for chickens will supply the calcium they need, but is this adverse for roosters if just used as general grit in the run? We use crushed granite and supplement with dried meal worms and just ordered Grubbly black fly supplement to see if this helps with a softer than should be shell.
