I have a 4-year-old Ameraucana mix who has gotten very thin in the last few days. I admit I just noticed it yesterday but it has probably been going on a few days longer. My husband and daughter had been taking care of the coop, and I wasn't up there for a few days.

She is lethargic, her poop is a bit runny, but she did poop twice already this morning. We isolated her from the rest of the flock, but they don't seem to be bothering her anyway.

We got her to eat about 2 tbsp of pellets last night and she drank a few sips of water that I had mixed with the appropriate measured amounts of corrid, flock leader plus and some apple cider vinegar to target likely things like cocci and worms. I don't have a dewormer on hand and couldn't find anything at tractor supply.

She refused pellets this morning, and we managed to get about 2 tbsp of scrambled egg in her. She's virtually refusing water.

She went through this in the fall, and idiot me, I can't remember what I did for her beyond what I'm doing right now. Any ideas about what it could be?

I don't plan to take her to a vet, but aim for her to live and die peacefully and without pain.

Is her crop empty in the morning? If not, it may be impacted.

I had one exactly like this and I started feeding her her food but with water in it. It makes a soft mush and she loved it ate a lot and does feel better still thin but eating well now: the mush . The feed with water and some grit in mash hope it helps

When was her last egg?

What's her crop like?

Any lice or mites?

Corid won't hurt her even if she doesn't have Coccidiosis. Just be sure not to give extra vitamins/supplements that contain B1 (Thiamine). Corid should be the only thing in the drinking water.

Apple Cider vinegar does not treat Coccidiosis or Worms.
If you want to deworm, you can used Fenbendazole (Safeguard) or Albendazole (Valbazen).

Safeguard can be found at TSC, it's Safeguard Liquid Goat Dewormer or Safeguard Equine Paste. Valbazen will have to be ordered online.

To treat most worms that poultry can have except for Tapeworm:

Safeguard dose is 0.23ml per pound of weight given orally once a day for 5 days in a row.
---OR---
Valbazen dose is 0.08ml per pound of weight given orally once, then repeated in 10 days.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dosing for Corid For Reference
Liquid Corid dose is 2tsp or Powdered Corid Dose is 1 1/2tsp per gallon of water given for 5-7 days as the only source of drinking water.
Do not add any extra vitamins/electrolytes that contain B1(Thiamine) to food or water during the course of treatment.

My 4 year old hen is also thin and started sleeping in the nest box at night. Her poo is normal. She looks a bit pale. I will try the mash and see if she eats more. The rest of my flock is fine. Could it be old age?
