My name is Casey and I have always enjoyed chickens! Recently after obsessing how much I wanted some my dad figured out I could have up to 8. This all came up so fast I'm not really sure what to do. ;( on the bright side I have gone and priced all equipment. Is it worth all the money if we can only keep chickens 3 season? If I got them today I would only have 3 months of eggs. I need help making the smart move in this situation. Please help me! Thank you!

! Happy you joined us! I am confused - you said 3 seasons and 3 months...did you mean 3 years? Three months would not be worth it - 3 years would - that's a lot of eggs plus a lot of enjoyment. Good luck to you! Take a look in the Learning Center about what it takes to be a responsible chicken keeper.

If I got chickens now it would take 4-5 months before the hens would start laying eggs.I made a deal with my parents that the chickens would not last through the winter. Should I stop on this whole process? Or go for it and see what happens?

My family is affraid of chickens living in our house. And I dont have enough money saved up to put it in to keeping them in the winter. It would be a new experience having chickens. And like everyone I want happy healthy chickens.

Coops and runs need not be elaborate or expensive - there are some great ideas in the Coops section for coops made from reclaimed or recycled materials (pallets, old plastic outdoor playhouses, etc.) If the coop is draft free (but still has ventilation) they will be fine in the winter without heat. Check out the Coops section below...don't be bummed by the one that look like mansions and palaces - they are beautiful but chickens that are properly tended to are just as happy in a pallet house. Give it some thought and good luck!
