We have been keeping backyard chickens for over 2 years and my wife and I have grown to love our flock. I have been wanting a rooster for quite a while now and I came to the sad realization that I can't have a standard sized rooster out of respect for my neighbors. So I have been kicking around the idea of expanding our flock but dooing so with bantams. I believe I can find a bantam rooster with a little bantam sized crow if there is such a thing. Even a smaller sized rooster would make me happy. Im wanting to build a separate coop and run for them, and I also would like to get into breeding them as well so we can get the full experience of truly rasing and caring for our chickens. Any advice on breeds to start out with, housing, or general knowlage on bantams would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Even small roosters crow loud. If there was a quiet one then I would already have him.. Serama roosters are supposed to be the most low volume. They are tiny and beautiful. Bantam silkies I heard are on the lower volume level. They still have VOLUME.

Haha yes I know all roosters are pretty much loud but I have been around a few that could barely crow. Some of my hens are louder when their done laying an egg! I know there few and far between but I imagine I can locate one somewhere. We have a frizzle/sizzle chick now that we believe is a young rooster. I do like the serama's a lot. I also think the Japanese bantams are pretty neat little birds to.

I adore my cochins and my d'uccle, they are sweet and spunky. I have both smooth and frizzle cochins.

They are in a separate coop and run from my large chickens, but the free range in the same area, they are both hardy breeds.

Just out of curiosity, Have you seen there roosters hiding a pack of Camels or Luck Strikes behind your back,???

I still have a Japanese bantam currently, and looking to get another Serama to replace the one that went to the other side.

Good luck! What bantam roos lack in lung space, they make make up for it in sheer number of crows... lol... I actually like the LF crows more... in fact, I'm tring to rehome a little serama roo due to his enthusiasm to outcrow everyone else... :D

Thank you all for all the info.I'm super excited to start raising bantams. It has almost became an obsession lol. I still have a lot to learn and I know without a doubt, that I'm in the right place.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I lost a few over the past 2 years, recently too. It's a hard pill to swallow once you get attached. That sure is a pretty bird, WOW!
